Soulful Sundays – strength

It isn’t strength to endure abuse.
Strength is walking away from it.

(I wrote this as a reminder to myself some time ago, and came across it recently. It felt right to share)

There is this mentality that strength is being able to endure hardship. The longer you put up with it, the stronger you are. And it’s become a gold standard: The stronger you are, the better you are. Live inside that hard shell, and expect the same out of others.

I would like to state now that strength isn’t about how much abuse or hardship a person can endure. It also isn’t weakness to breakdown, to cry, or to ask for help.

Strength is having the courage to walk away. You do deserve better. Whether it’s an abusive coworker, a controlling partner, a toxic friend, or family that doesn’t deserve the title.
Walk away.

(I’m choosing this next image because I wrote about Sam in #DefinitelynotDisappointed to give voice to my own struggle to leave the abuse and follow my heart. I still feel like a failure, but I’m glad that I walked away)
